TICO OF THE SEVEN SEAS

The story is that of Nanami, a young girl who has befriended a killer whale named Tico. Together they travel the worlds oceans and seas with Nanami's father, an oceanographic researcher who is looking for a fabled creature known as the luminous whale. Another group of researchers is also looking for this animal, but because they believe it can be used to help make biochemical weapons. As they travel, Nanami and her friends have numerous adventures involving all sorts of unsavory characters. Unforetunately, as mentioned before, some of the story lacks cohesion, characters who appear early on often vanish and do not appear until near the end of the series, leaving the audience guessing as to their initial importance, but I found it a minor flaw considering that the adventures that Tico and Nanami find themselves in are so much fun to watch. Tico's animation is pretty solid, but the color pallete and shading of the cells are relatively plain making it feel as though Tico of the Seven Seas was made much earlier than 1994. Typically, however the cell counts are good and action scenes are pretty fluid. Occasionally, production quality does seems to fall with soom scenes seeming choppy or poorly layed out, but in general, I wasn't overly put off by any of this.
Tico's sound quality is pretty high, with all the sounds I expected from a show based around exploration of the seas. The sounds of waves, gulls, seals, and the wind were put to good use. Nanami's ship's engine has a wonderfully old-fashioned chug-chug-chug sound that was well suited to the character of the vessel.
The music is also pretty good, and the BGM track adds a lot of character to this program.
The voice acting is pretty solid fare, as has come to be expected of most any Japanese production. All of the characters seem well cast allowing the voices to fit the personalities of the characters to help flesh them out.
For an older title it still surprises me that Tico of the Sevens has not really recieved that much fan attention. While I doubt one positive review will do much, I hope that eventually fans support this title a little bit more.

Huh? what happened? I decided to write my LJ in English. Because i also have some friends from abroad. I hope that this will not disturb you and you understand me, nevertheless.
